Description

The Hydrangea macrophylla Leuchtfeuer is a strong and beautiful plant that produces bright cherry-red flowers later in the season. These flowers add a unique touch to ericaceous beds.

This particular Hydrangea plant has a bushy habit and grows up to 1 metre tall. It has large deciduous leaves that are oblong, matte green in colour, and bordered with brown, measuring around 22cm (8.7 in) in length and are supported by sturdy stems. This plant produces numerous compact and rounded flower heads in July and August. These umbels initially blossom in a very light green-yellow shade with a red border. As they mature, they turn into a beautiful cherry red, creating a striking contrast. The Hydrangea macrophylla family flowers on old wood.

The Hydrangea macrophylla Leuchtfeuer requires slightly acidic and fresh soil to maintain its colour. Mix ericaceous compost with your garden soil. This beautiful bush is hardy down to about -12°C (10.4 °F) and prefers pot cultivation in areas with cold winters.

To take care of Hydrangea macrophylla Leuchtfeuer, it's best to place it in a shaded or half-shaded area protected from cold winds. You can pair it with other hydrangeas, ferns, lamiums or conifers to create a beautiful contrast.

Remember, do not prune the plant too early! It's recommended to leave the dried flower heads on the plant and only cut them after the spring frosts. This will effectively protect the new growth and future flowers.

Planting and care

When planting the Hydrangea macrophylla Leuchtfeuer, it is best to choose either spring or autumn. The plant prefers fresh, humus-rich, and well-drained soil, with a preference for a shady to semi-shady exposure.  The soil should be mulched with pine bark to maintain freshness and acidity. After frost, prune the dried umbrellas on the plant to protect future shoots. To rejuvenate the hydrangea, prune one-third of the branches every two years. Keep in mind that the flowers only form on the old wood!
