Hello, out of the 10 plants I ordered, only one was damaged, a stem was cut during transportation (Hydrangea aspera - Rough-leaved hydrangea). I put it in water hoping that the stem will grow roots so I can replant it. Thankfully, the pots were protected with plastic (preventing the soil from spilling out) and the stakes were there to try and support the poor plant, the cardboard was impeccable. For next time, I suggest using sturdy wooden or plastic crates to keep them upright along with all your other protective measures. Thank you for your attention.

Description

The Hydrangea aspera villosa 'Anthony Bullivant' is a variety of tall hydrangeas. The colours of the flowering are quite remarkable, a beautiful crown of pink flowers surrounds an umbel of intense purple flowers. The opulent and villous foliage that characterises this category of hydrangea brings a lovely exotic touch.

The aspera hydrangeas belong to the Hydrangea family, they are large bushy plants that can reach 2m (6 ft 7 in) in height and width. In these hydrangeas, the flower head is made up of small flowers arranged in an umbrella or flat corymb. The sterile flowers, larger in size, form a crown around the small fertile flowers, this particular arrangement is called grandmother's bonnet.

This bush likes a cool, semi-shaded environment and thrives in a bed of ericaceous soil in the company of other hydrangeas, hostas or camellias. The Hydrangea aspera villosa 'Anthony Bullivant' is perfect for adding colour to a shady area, the colours of its flowering will have the effect of a little oasis of light.

Planting and care

When planting the hydrangea aspera villosa 'Anthony Bullivant', choose a spot that is partially shaded or gently sunny. If your soil is very chalky, prepare the soil by mixing garden soil, leaf compost, and ericaceous soil. This variety usually grows well in deep, well-drained soil that remains moist in summer. Adding well-rotted manure or compost will help it thrive. It is essential to water the plant abundantly during planting and the first two years after planting. It is also recommended to water it several times during the summer in case of prolonged drought. Stop watering after September, and in cold regions, protect the base with a mulch of dead leaves.

Note that this variety of hydrangea is not suitable for container cultivation. It will grow best when planted directly into the ground.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning hydrangeas is an important task that should be done at the end of winter, around early March. To keep your hydrangea healthy and looking good, you should remove dead wood and some old branches from the base. When pruning, keep in mind that the flowers only grow on the wood from the previous year, mainly on the terminal buds. Avoid pruning your bush back by more than 30 cm (11.8 in), as doing so may prevent it from flowering during the year. After the hydrangea has bloomed in autumn, remove the stems that have already bloomed and the shoots that seem weak.

Disease resistance Very good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
