Planted for almost 8 years now, I believe, this young plant thrives, a bit too much even, so I have to do regular pruning. Its foliage is evergreen at our place, but it has never wanted to flower! Not even a hint of a flower bud, whereas I saw a magnificent one at a friend's, in the shade just like mine...

Description

Hydrangea anomala 'Winter Surprise' is a decorative form of climbing hydrangea. It bears dense evergreen or semi-evergreen foliage. In autumn, its leaves are tinged with red, especially on the underside. It provides a decorative aspect all year round. Robust and vigorous, it clings to the support on its own thanks to its climbing roots. However, this variety maintains more modest dimensions than the classic climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris. You will also love 'Winter Surprise' for its flat bouquets of starry white flowers in May-June.

This climbing hydrangea is an excellent choice for a semi-shady situation, for example trained against a wall or at the back of a garden, where it will be particularly luminous during the flowering period.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shaded location, for example against an east-facing wall, or even to the north. It does not require ericaceous soil, but appreciates deep, moist, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting. If planting near a wall and the soil is dry at its base, place the root ball at least 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) away from it and incorporate a quantity of well-decomposed compost to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, it can be planted in cold regions. It requires little pruning. However, after flowering, you can shorten the stems that are too long, and remove any dead wood. Guide the young stems onto the support to distribute them well. They will then attach themselves.

Like all climbing hydrangeas, 'Winter Surprise' will grow slowly for the first two years, but it will speed up.
