Description

The Hibiscus syriacus 'Summer Ruffle' is a brand new American variety of Tree Mallow, attractive for its original and bright foliage, a beautifully variegated green-grey-blue with cream and white, and its particularly compact habit, ideally suited for small spaces and container gardening. Its long summer flowering has pretty mauve-pink corollas with a red centre and a small crumpled heart of petals, which adds to its unique charm. This fantastic shrub deserves a special place near the house, as a focal point in a perennial border, and in a beautiful pot on the terrace. This Tree Mallow is easy to grow in non-scorching sun or partial shade, in slightly moist soil, and in all climates.

The Hibiscus syriacus, also known as the Rose Mallow, is a shrub that grows well in our climate. It belongs to the mallow family, which also includes hollyhocks and marshmallows. It is originally from Asia and has many varieties, including the Summer Ruffle, found in a Michigan nursery.

The Summer Ruffle is a small shrub with unique leaves mixed with green, white, and cream colours. It has rounded, bushy growth not exceeding 1.20 m (3 ft 11 in) in all directions and blooms from July to September with lavender-pink flowers. This plant likes bright, warm conditions and can tolerate light shade in warm areas. It only needs a little maintenance and should be planted in moist soil until summer ends to support its foliage and flowering.

The Summer Ruffle is not a delicate plant and can be grown in all regions, especially in small gardens. It pairs well with other shrubs like lavender and salvia. It can also be grown in containers on a terrace or balcony.

Planting and care

To grow a Hibiscus syriacus 'Summer Ruffle', plant it in spring or autumn in well-drained, loose, and fertile soil in a sunny spot or in partial shade in southern regions. Add compost and sand to your garden soil to improve its quality before planting. After planting, water generously. It's normal for this bush not to start growing vegetation before May.

Although altheas can tolerate heat and occasional dry soil, they thrive more in soil that retain moisture in summer. To keep the soil moist, you may need to mulch the base of these bushes.
