Japanese Snow Flower
Juste magnifique! Beautiful flowering in purple, reminiscent of that of lilacs, but lasting much longer! Blooms from May. I planted them in the ground.

Description
Deutzia hybrida 'Raspberry Sundae' is a new variety of deutzia with large pink-violet and white bicoloured flowers. This deciduous shrub with spring flowering has a rather compact growth, reaching about 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) in all directions at maturity. With its slightly slender rounded habit and graceful branches laden with trailing clusters of flowers, it will be magnificent in a large pot on a sunny terrace, or integrated into a shrub border.
Deutzia belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family (formerly Saxifragaceae), just like hydrangeas. Native to eastern Asia, this deciduous foliage shrub naturally grows in groves and wooded areas of the Himalayas. The hybrid Deutzia 'Raspberry Sundae' is a recent English creation. It is distinguished by a fairly compact habit and a superb white and pink-violet flowering. It forms a well-branched and rounded bush, reaching about 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) in all directions at maturity. Its growth is rather fast. The remarkably abundant flowering takes place from April to June, almost making the foliage disappear. Its beautiful star-shaped flowers have 5 white petals delicately tinged with purple-pink tips. They are larger than average, grouped in dense panicles along the branches. The bunch of numerous yellow stamens makes the corolla's heart sparkle. Slightly fragrant, the flowers attract pollinating insects and stand out beautifully against its small ovate leaves, which are very dark green and strongly veined, turning bronze and purple-violet at the end of the season.
Somewhat out-dated survivors from older gardens, deutzias, like lilacs and old roses, are among those almost indestructible shrubs that require little effort but in return bring a lot of satisfaction to the gardener. In the garden, the 'Raspberry Sundae' deutzia is a beautiful landscape plant. It can be used within a shrub border or on a sunny slope. Its limited growth allows it to fit into small gardens, but also to adorn the terrace or balcony when planted in a large pot. Deutzia will produce its peak flowering in a limestone, humus-rich, and moist soil. The flowered branches hold up well in a vase, making original bouquets when combined with roses and wildflowers.

Planting and care
Deutzia hybrida 'Raspberry Sundae' is very easy to grow as it is perfectly hardy (down to -20 °C (-4 °F)) and thrives wherever the soil is deep, well draining, and fairly moist, in full sun or partial shade. It requires little maintenance, but it is recommended to prune it every year or every 2-3 years. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded location between November and April. Water it regularly during the first few summers only. It reaches its mature size in 5 or 7 years. It is a disease-resistant shrub.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
