All the branches froze during the first winter, with each new shoot of 20 cm (8in) freezing every subsequent winter. Definitely dead this spring after languishing for 3 years. Either not a hardy plant or delivered too young (in a 4/5 L container if I remember correctly).

Description

New to cultivation, the Cercis canadensis 'Silver Lining' is the first Judas tree with variegated foliage.

This new variety appears as one of the few bushes with white variegation that only grows in the sun. Not very floriferous, it produces clusters of very intense violet flowers in spring. The main attraction of this bush is its sumptuous variegated white foliage. Very graphic, its pure white variegation is marginate and evenly distributed around the edges of the leaves.

A slow-growing bush, the Cercis canadensis 'Silver Lining' reaches a height of 2m (6 ft 7 in) or even 2.50m. It likes a protected and sunny aspect. Hardy, it appreciates rich and well-drained soil. It can be cultivated on a terrace or in a bed in warmer climates, associated in contrast with the dark leaves of the Albizia 'Summer Chocolate' in mild regions or associated with the Black Lace Elderberry in colder regions.

Planting and care

The Cercis tolerates sun or partial shade in rich and moist soil. In poor soil, enrich the planting soil with good compost or potting soil. Water it regularly during the first year in case of drought, as it does not tolerate drying out. It will grow in all types of soil but prefers neutral or acidic soils. It is perfectly hardy, but young shoots can suffer in case of severe frost in early spring. Protection with horticultural fleece may be useful during the first years in case of a severe cold spell in March.
