Description
This pair of blue and pink spireas brings together two excellent varieties of Caryopteris x clandonensis. Resistant to cold, bushy, and compact, these bushes have the advantage of flowering in late summer, until October. Their flowering attracts many butterflies. The inflorescences are small clusters of tiny blue or pastel pink flowers depending on the plant. The deciduous foliage is slightly greyish-green and aromatic when crushed, another asset of these plants that give a crazy charm to the late season. They will beautify your garden, as well as your balconies and terraces, planted in a container.
This pair consists of:
1 Caryopteris x clandonensis Grand Bleu: a vigorous variety, forming a bushy and upright shrub 1m tall and 1.50m wide at maturity. Its flowers are a deep blue.
1 Caryopteris x clandonensis Stephi: a more compact variety (75cm tall and 50cm wide) awarded for the abundance and originality of its pale lilac pink flowering.
These two caryopteris are most often used in shrub borders or low hedges, but they can also be planted in a large rockery or in a 30 to 40-litre pot. They thrive in many regions even quite cold, (down to -15°C) or dry in summer. Plant in October-November or March-April, with 80cm between each plant. You can easily create a large bed flowering from April to October composed of this pair, bushy salvias in pink, blue, purple, or white tones, lavenders, and rockroses, for example. They are easy to grow in well-drained, well-worked garden soil that does not retain excess water in winter. Their charming flowering attracts butterflies and many pollinating insects.

Planting and care
This duo of Caryopteris is used in borders, low hedges, rockeries or pots on the terrace. Caryopteris likes warmth, which is why it should be placed in the sun. It is not demanding on the nature of the soil, as long as it is well-drained, meaning it does not retain excess water. It tolerates limestone and withstands drought once well-rooted. Plant it in spring, mixing your garden soil with compost. If you are in a cold region, where summers are cool and winter temperatures can be below -15°C, place it against a south-facing wall. Plant your young plants 80 cm apart from each other. After planting, water generously once or twice a week to allow for establishment. It is an easy plant to grow.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
