Description

Acer platanoides Crimson King is a large, vigorous maple tree, appreciated for its large decorative purple foliage, almost black.

Originating from the Caucasus, this hardy tree, which can reach 15m (49 ft 2 in) in height at maturity, is also called "Plane Maple" because its leaves resemble those of the plane tree. It has a spreading habit and an oval and dense crown. The deciduous, opposite leaves are divided into 5 or 7 lobes, 10 to 20cm (3.9 to 7.9 in) long and are dark purple, almost black. In June, an insignificant red flowering gives way to winged fruits that are 3 to 5cm (1.2 to 2 in) long.

The Acer platanoides Crimson King is an easy-to-grow tree, it thrives in any moist, fertile, well-worked and well-drained soil, in a sunny, but not scorching, or partly shaded position. Find a location for it that is sheltered from strong winds.

The Acer platanoides Crimson King has a medium growth rate, it looks magnificent as a specimen tree, for example in the middle of a park, and it also works very well as a street tree.

Tip: Prune every 3 to 5 years to balance the branches and maintain a harmonious habit.

Planting and care

The Crimson King Acer platanoides is best planted in spring or autumn in any fertile, deep and cool soil in a sunny, but not scorching, or semi-shaded position. Beware of strong winds. Keep the soil moist during the first two summers after planting. Mulching can be beneficial to maintain good soil moisture. Pruning is necessary for young plants, and then every 3 years to balance the branches and maintain a harmonious habit. Do not prune after December as the sap rises very early.
