Description
The 4 Seasons Eco Hedge Kit is a selection of 6 different bare-root shrubs, carefully chosen to create a colourful, flowering, lively hedge all year round. Perfect for a garden that embraces nature, this kit combines hardy and easy-to-grow species. Each bush brings its own special touch: flowers, colourful foliage, decorative wood, or attractive small fruits. To be planted in autumn in well-prepared soil. One kit covers 5 to 6 linear metres depending on the planting density.
The kit includes:
1 x Canadian Serviceberry (Amelanchier lamarckii), adult height: 3 to 4 m. This majestic bush blooms with white flowers in spring and produces small blue-black fruits in autumn, highly appreciated by birds. Its deciduous foliage turns reddish-orange in the fall.
1 x Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), adult height: 2 to 3 m. This thorny bush is covered with white flowers from March onwards. It then produces small black fruits that feed the local wildlife.
1 x Yellow-twig Dogwood (Cornus stolonifera), adult height: 2 to 2.5 m. Recognisable by its bright yellow wood that brightens up the garden in winter, this deciduous bush is hardy and thrives in cool, moist soils.
1 x European Spindle (Euonymus europaeus), adult height: 2 to 3 m. This elegant bush offers deciduous foliage that turns pink and red in autumn. Its bright pink fruits, with orange seeds, create a beautiful visual effect and are highly decorative, but toxic to humans.
1 x Forsythia (Forsythia intermedia), adult height: 2 to 3 m. A very floriferous bush covered with bright yellow flowers at the beginning of spring, as soon as the nice weather returns. Its flowering attracts pollinators.
1 x Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum), adult height: 1.5 to 2 m. Appreciated for its bright pink flowers in clusters in spring and its aromatic foliage, this bush attracts bees and adds colour to the hedge early in the season.
Plant these bushes in autumn or early winter, in full sun or partial shade, mixing them and spacing them about 1 metre apart. They adapt to any good, well-prepared garden soil enriched with leaf compost. Mixed hedges require little or no pruning, so you can enjoy the flowers and fruits.
Practical tips:
Fully enjoy this hedge by planting it sheltered from strong winds and adding some spring bulbs at its base to create a carpet of colour early in the season. This kit guarantees you a lively hedge that animates your garden all year round, while promoting biodiversity!

Planting and care
Plant this Eco 4 Seasons Hedge Kit in full sun or partial shade, in well-prepared soil, enriched with leaf mold, moist but well-drained. Dig planting holes 30-40 cm in all directions, loosening the bottom and walls well with a fork or a pickaxe. Maintain a planting distance of 80 cm to 1 m between each young plant. These easy-to-grow, undemanding bushes only require mulching in summer in dry climates to maintain some moisture, at least during the first summers following planting. Water them in the first years in case of pronounced drought, abundantly (15-20 litres of water each time) but spaced out.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
