Collection items (10 plants)

Description

This is a collection of 5 varieties of evergreen shrub varieties with staggered flowering, of medium size, easy to grow and maintain, and tolerant of dry soils in summer. Delivered in a kit of 10 potted plants (2 plants of each variety), they are perfect for creating a flowering screen for most of the year, while protecting your garden from wind and prying eyes, even in winter. This shrub kit allows you to create approximately 10 metres (33 feet) of hedge at a lower cost.

The collection consists of:

- 2 Viburnum tinus, Laurustinus: approximately 2.50 m (8ft) in height by 2 m (7ft) in spread, this shrub has a very dense habit and grows almost anywhere. Its dark green foliage serves as a backdrop for long winter to spring flowering: its pretty pinkish flower buds form as early as December and open into clusters of white and honey-scented flowers from February to April depending on the climate. They give way to small black fruits appreciated by birds. It tolerates pruning very well and is resistant to -15°C (5°F).

- 2 Ceanothus thyrsiflorus repens, California Lilac: slow-growing, with a rather prostrate habit, approximately 1 m (3ft) in height by 1.20 m (4ft) in width. Abundant spring flowering in sky blue, on a small, glossy, dark green foliage. Place it slightly in front of the other shrubs in the kit, in a staggered arrangement. Hardiness: up to -12°C (10.4°F) in well-drained soil.

- 2 Choisya ternata, Mexican Orange Blossom: approximately 2 m (7ft) in all directions, fairly fast-growing, this bush has a nicely rounded habit. Its shiny, bright green foliage is aromatic when crushed. It first blooms in April-May, then again in late summer. Its clusters of small white flowers are very pleasantly scented, reminiscent of orange blossom. Hardy up to approximately -12/-14°C (10.4/6.8°F), in well-drained soil.

- 2 Escallonia Donard Seedling: bushy and spreading, fairly fast-growing, averaging 2 m (7ft) in height at maturity by 2.50 m (8ft) in width. Its small leaves are shiny dark green. Flowering occurs from June-July to September, earlier or later depending on the climate, in the form of clusters of light pink to white flowers enclosed in a pink calyx. Hardy up to -15°C (5°F).

- 2 Abelia Edward Goucher: approximately 1.75 m (6ft) in all directions, its habit is generally rounded and bushy from the base. Long, lightly scented flowering from July to late August depending on the climate, until October. These are small pearly white bells with lilac-pink reverse, followed by decorative rusty bracts on the autumn foliage. Small glossy leaves, semi-evergreen to evergreen depending on winter severity, light green in colour, turning bronze, purplish or reddish under the cold. It is the hardiest of all: it withstands up to approximately -15°C (5°F).

Plant these shrubs preferably in autumn or early spring, in full sun or partial shade, mixing them and spacing them 80 cm (32in) to 1 meter (3 feet) apart. They are content with any well-prepared garden soil improved with leaf compost. Once well established, they do not require watering in summer. This selection is suitable for a garden located in a region where winters are relatively mild.

Tip: Do not prune early in the season to fully enjoy the flowering! If possible, also avoid pruning in late summer to enjoy the fruits and feed the garden birds in winter.

Planting and care

Plant this collection in the sun or partial shade, in ordinary but well-prepared soil, enriched with leaf compost, that is rather moist but well-drained. Dig planting holes of 30-40 cm (12-16in) in all directions, thoroughly loosening the bottom and walls with a fork or pickaxe. Maintain a planting distance of 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) between each bush. Easy to grow and not very demanding, these shrubs only require mulching in summer in dry climates to maintain some moisture, at least during the first summers after planting. Water them abundantly in the first few years in the case of pronounced drought (15-20 litres of water each time), but keep waterings spaced out. You can prune the longest branches to help your shrubs branch out.
