Description

The Rose 'Comtesse André d'Outremont' is a modern hybrid of Rosa moschata that is small in size, with changing pastel colours, particularly floriferous, fragrant, and well-suited for border and small space planting. It produces beautiful bouquets with around thirty semi-double flowers revealing a bouquet of stamens. An easy variety, very cheerful, that also adapts well to container cultivation.

The rose 'Comtesse André d'Outremont' or 'VEL15mkama' is a Belgian creation by Lens Roses from 2015. It is derived, among others, from the musk rose (Rosa x moschata), a spontaneous hybrid probably originating from Asia Minor or the Middle East. Similar to polyanthas and floribundas, roses of this family produce flowers grouped in bouquets, but their colours are more refined, and they have a more flexible and graceful habit. 'Comtesse André d'Outremont' shows rapid growth and develops flexible stems. Ultimately, this bush reaches a height of between 50 and 60 cm (20 and 24in), with a roughly equivalent spread. Its leaves are divided into slightly glossy elliptical leaflets of a dark green colour. The deciduous foliage, absent in winter, is healthy. Flowering begins in June and continues in waves until October. A soil that is too dry in summer will limit flowering. It forms large bouquets with up to 30 semi-double flowers measuring 6 cm (2in) in diameter. Each flower changes from pastel pink to creamy white, passing through a more coral, or even light salmon, tone. The fragrance of the flowers is more or less pronounced, dominated by floral and aromatic notes. The hardiness of this rose is estimated at -15 °C (5°F).

This rose 'Comtesse d'Outremont' thrives in any well-prepared and enriched soil. It requires very little maintenance. Plant it in a large border to highlight the curve of a lawn or pathway. It can be planted in a row, with a spacing of 45 cm (18in) between its neighbours. It also has a great effect when mixed with other border roses in white, yellow, or orange tones. Place it in the same tones at the front of a bed of English shrub roses.

Planting and care

To plant your 'Comtesse André d'Outremont' rose, prepare your soil to a depth of 25 cm (10in) by crumbling the soil and adding a base amendment such as blood, fish and bone at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water generously to remove any air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root growth. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser to stimulate flowering.

Roses often develop unsightly stains in late summer, but this is a natural occurrence and does not harm the rose.
