The only foot that clearly has been prepared before the others and only has one viable eye on one of its 3 branches... But once planted and well-watered, I hope that other eyes will sprout!

Description

The 'Botero' Rose is a modern hybrid tea rose repeatedly rewarded for its powerful fragrance of Damask rose with hints of currant and blackcurrant. Its large, double flowers of strawberry red bloom consistently and regularly from summer until the first frost, complemented by beautiful, prominently veined, semi-matte green foliage. A rose that is generous, reliable, sturdy and shiny, easy to grow in all our regions. Its flowers are, of course, excellent in bouquets.

Botero® 'Meiafone' is a modern bush rose with large flowers obtained by Meilland in 2003. This excellent variety has won the Fragrance Cup in Geneva, the fragrance prize in Saverne and Madrid, the bronze medal in Rome, and the fragrance grand prize in Nantes. It is a bushy and upright shrub, reaching about 1.10m (4ft) in height and 70cm (28in) in width at maturity, with rapid growth. It produces robust, thorny and well-branched branches, which bear elegant foliage, purple at the opening, then bright green with prominent veins. Throughout the summer and until October, if faded flowers are removed, the plant continuously produces large cup-shaped flowers measuring 12-13cm (5in) in diameter, reminiscent of some old-fashioned roses. Very double, they are composed of 90 to 100 velvety petals of intense red and open to a tightly packed heart. They are solitary and borne at the end of long shoots from the current year or emerging from 2-year-old stems. An intoxicating fragrance distinguishes the very recurrent flowering. In this variety, the roses fade with great elegance, shedding a shower of petals on the ground.

This modern rose 'Botero' has its place in all flower gardens; its magnificent roses enhance the decor of any bed, even the most modest, and elevate any bouquet. Roses of such red truly radiate in our very sunny regions, especially in semi-shade and against the light. The relentless southern light reveals, sublimates and makes one love the intensity of red, while the milkier skies of our northern regions magnify pastel or faded tones. With its sumptuous flowers and beautiful floribundity, 'Botero' will fit into a large rose bed or stand out in a well-maintained small garden. It adapts to all soils that are not too dry and all climates, tolerating rain and heat, allowing it to be welcomed without reservation from north to south of our country, even at medium altitudes. It pairs perfectly with pale pink roses like 'Prince Jardinier', or white roses like 'Fée des Neiges' and pretty easy-to-grow perennials like daylilies, royal lilies, perennial geraniums or campanulas.

Planting and care

To plant your 'Botero', choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-worked soil that is not too heavy and has enough nutrients. Avoid planting in poor and excessively dry soils. Prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment, such as blood, fish and bone, at the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water abundantly to remove air pockets and continue to water regularly for a few weeks to help the roots establish.

Pruning modern repeat flowering roses is important for flowering and should be done in three stages:

1. Regular maintenance pruning: During the season, regularly shorten the flowering branches and remove faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves to encourage repeat flowering.

2. Preparatory autumn pruning: Lightly prune in preparation for the 'main' spring pruning. Note: This is not recommended in regions with cold winters as this could weaken the bush.

3. Spring pruning: In February-March, when the buds have become shoots 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young, strong branches to one-quarter of their length.

When pruning, always aim to remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots while opening up the centre of the bush. Retain the most vigorous branches, generally 3 to 6 well-positioned, to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant ½ cm or 1 cm (0in) above an outward-facing bud.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
