Description

The wallflower or Erysimum Constant Cheer is an excellent ground cover for dry soil. Very unique, this wallflower forms multicoloured flower carpets. During the bud burst period, the flowers are first apricot, then salmon pink once they bloom, and finally they turn deep purple, providing a continuous spectacle from April to June.

Its evergreen grey foliage is also decorative, but it makes it somewhat fragile in very cold winters.

This plant is perfect for a sunny, dry, and rocky area of the garden.

Combine it with other ground covers for dry soil: Erigeron karvinskianus, Achillea 'Terracotta', and add some verticality with Iris germanica, Pennisetum, or Stipa tenuifolia for a harmonious and graphic scene.

Planting and care

Plant the shrubby wallflower in a sunny location in neutral to limestone soil, even stony and rocky, and well-drained. In summer, make sure the soil does not dry out too much. Cut the stems after flowering. Erysimum is hardy, but the evergreen foliage weakens the plant in winter. These plants should be protected with a mulch in cases of prolonged very cold weather.
