Description
Scabiosa NOVA® ‘Dew Drops’ is a particularly compact and floriferous scabious, offering a multitude of small lavender-blue flowers from summer to autumn. This hardy perennial is easy to grow in well-drained soil, creating a charming, small, always-flowering cushion. It makes a lovely impact in borders, flower containers or rock gardens.
Scabiosa columbaria Nova® ‘Dew Drops’ belongs to the Dipsacaceae or Caprifoliaceae family, depending on the classification. It is descended from a species called dove scabious, native to Europe, temperate Asia, Algeria and Morocco.
The cultivar Nova® ‘Dew Drops’ is a small plant that develops into a low, rounded clump made up of branched and spreading stems. The foliage is semi-evergreen in winter, composed of dark green, elongated oval leaves, toothed at the margins. Flowering repeats from May-June to October if you regularly remove faded flowers. The flowers are gathered in small inflorescences of 2-3 cm in diameter. These flower heads are rounded, resembling a pincushion. At the centre, one can see a dense crown of tubular florets, tightly packed together, in shades of pale lavender-blue to mauve. These central florets are surrounded by wider, flatter, more rounded petals — actually ligulate flowers — which open irregularly around the central disc, like a light, slightly messy frill. The flower heads sway in the wind at the tip of slender stems 20-25 cm tall. These are lovely flowers for composing light bouquets.
Beneath its fragile appearance, the scabious NOVA® ‘Dew Drops’ is a small robust plant. At the edge of a sunny border, at the foot of shrub roses or in a rock garden, it goes well with small ornamental grasses such as blue fescue 'Easy Blue' or Stipa tenuifolia, hardy geraniums for ground cover or even annual flowers such as Nigella 'Midnight Blue'. It can also be combined with santolinas or Nepeta 'Kit Cat' for a chic Mediterranean effect. In a pot, it brings a fresh look with small thistles like Echinops and nemesias in pastel shades.
Scabious are friends of bees, butterflies and burnet moths. Bring them into your garden or onto your terrace!

Planting and care
Plant Scabiosa columbaria Nova Dew Drops in a sunny spot in the north and a slightly shadier spot in the south (especially in the afternoon). Scabious prefer slightly lime-rich, well-drained soils, even dry in summer. Soils that are too acidic, or too heavy and wet in winter, are not suitable. Water them regularly in the first year, but not excessively. A preventive treatment for powdery mildew with Bordeaux mixture can be useful. They sometimes fade after 2 or 3 seasons. To keep them, enrich the soil with an organic fertiliser and ensure they do not suffer from excess moisture in winter by lightening the planting substrate with gravel or coarse sand.
Every 3 years, divide the clumps of scabious and replant the divisions in renewed soil, amended with an organic fertiliser.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.

In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
