Arrived this morning with only one small leaf. Hoping that its growth will be normal, but we would like to receive slightly larger young plants.

Description
The Rodgersia pinnata 'Hercules' is a variety of rodgersia with a huge clump of palmate foliage, reminiscent of chestnuts, in an antique bronze-brown colour in spring that evolves to dark green, changing throughout the seasons, adorned with a creamy summer flowering. By the end of summer, it turns into a vibrant red-violet. With its ample habit and luxurious foliage, this perennial is irreplaceable for creating an exotic atmosphere in moist and rather shaded areas.
The Rodgersia pinnata is a Chinese herbaceous and deciduous species belonging to the Saxifragaceae family. From its fleshy rhizome emerges a clump of large pinnate leaves, not exceeding 60 cm (24in) in height and 80 cm (32in) in width. The clumps slowly spread to form stumps of over 1 m² over time. The 'Hercules' variety stands out for its spectacular clump dimensions, reaching 1.20 m (4ft) in height and 1 m (3ft) in width. The thick foliage with prominent veins, palmate or pinnate, strongly resembles that of chestnuts. The leaves are divided into 4 to 8 lanceolate, wrinkled, deeply veined leaflets, arranged in opposite pairs, with a terminal leaflet. 'Hercules' chooses the beginning of summer to bloom, sending out its tall red-stemmed panicles, taller than those of other varieties, adorned with cream-white, softly scented flowers. The flowering is followed on the flower stalks by the formation of dark, ornamental seed heads that persist for a long time on the plant.
The Rodgersia pinnata 'Hercules' is a shade and freshness-loving plant, ideal near water features, in the company of ferns, grasses, and astilbes, or at the edge of moist woodlands with Tiarella and heucheras. It can tolerate drier conditions, as long as it is planted in shade, but it also tolerates the sun if the soil remains moist. Plant it in numbers to cover the ground along a shaded path, or in isolation, highlighted by a golden sedge carpet, an XXL clump of heuchera, and the blue flowers of liverworts.

Planting and care
The Rodgersia pinnata 'Hercules' is planted in moist to even wet, and rich, typically undergrowth humus, acidic or neutral soil (avoid planting in limestone areas). It is preferably planted in partial shade (possibly in full sun in an area that remains moist in summer), with spacing between plants. When it reaches ripeness, the Rodgersia grows in size, sometimes over a meter depending on the varieties! Make sure to protect it from strong winds and direct sunlight, which can damage its foliage. Be careful of slug damage in spring.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
