Description

The Primula japonica Alba, is a pretty perennial candelabra primrose, deciduous with elongated light green leaves of about 20 cm (8in). From May to July, it bears floral stems 60 cm (24in) in height with crowns of white flowers.

This perennial appreciates humid soils or even marshy soils. The ideal location is near a stream or pond, preferably in the shade. With no maintenance, it thrives on its own by spreading freely everywhere.

The Candelabra primroses are the Asian varieties, whose stems have multiple levels of flowers.

Planting and care

Primula japonica 'Alba' generally requires a moist location and a clayey, humus-bearing soil, which yields very good results. Divide large clumps in autumn. Rejuvenate the stumps every 3 years for a beautiful flowering. Do not plant it too deeply as it is sensitive to "heart rot", a fungal disease.
