Description
Polygonatum commutatum is a vigorous perennial Solomon's seal, spectacular with its long flowering of large bell-shaped flowers, reminiscent of giant lily of the valley flowers. It reaches 90cm (35in).
This giant Solomon's seal forms clumps of arching stems with leafy ends. Its tender green foliage is opposite, alternate, and lanceolate, and measures 20cm (8in) long. From May to July, large white bells with green edges that are 3cm (1in) long grow in groups of 4 below the leaves, followed by spherical black fruits that are 1cm (0.4in) in diameter. This rhizomatous woodland plant has a slow growth rate but lives for a long time and requires no maintenance.
Not demanding, Polygonatum commutatum likes light, humus-rich and moist soil in a semi-shaded or even shaded situation. It grows in perfect harmony with wood squills, trilliums or ferns.

Planting and care
Polygonatum commutatum is easy to grow. Plant it preferably in partial shade or full shade, in light soil, rich in humus, and moist especially in spring. Add 1/3 sand and 1/3 compost to your topsoil when planting if it is poor or very heavy. Water regularly during the first few months after planting. Beware of attacks from slugs and whitefly larvae.
