Description

Podophyllum 'Kaleidoscope' is a ground-cover perennial with exceptional foliage, velvety and marbled with silver and bronze. Underneath its umbrella-like hexagonal leaves, which are 40cm (16in) wide in this variety, curious deep purple-red flowers bloom in spring. It is named 'Kaleidoscope' because its foliage is adorned with a symmetric pattern of rare beauty. The umbrella-like shape of its leaf adds to its appeal. This rare plant thrives in partial shade, in cool, non-calcareous, humus-rich, and well-drained soil.

Podophyllum 'Kaleidoscope' belongs to the Berberidaceae family. It is derived from Podophyllum delavayi, native to high-altitude forests in China. It was developed by the American nursery Terra Nova in 2004. This uncommon rhizomatous plant has a low, spreading habit. At maturity, it forms a clump 50cm (20in) tall with a spread of approximately 30cm (12in). In early spring, it produces hexagonal leaves that can reach a diameter of 40cm (16in), resembling an umbrella, with slightly toothed edges. These leaves are chartreuse green, marbled with silver and bronze in a symmetric pattern. From April to June, conspicuous red-purple flowers appear on short, fuzzy stems. Measuring 3cm (1in) in diameter, they are pear-shaped and pendant, with elongated petals. The plant takes 3 to 5 years to flower. It is hardy to -15°C (5°F) or lower.

Podophyllum 'Kaleidoscope' thrives in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil in partial shade. Like any woodland edge plant, it does not tolerate windy conditions. This botanical curiosity should be showcased at the edge of a shaded border, paired with ferns, Epimediums, Solomon's Seals, and Arisaemas.

In colder regions, protect the stump in winter with a 20cm (8in) thick layer of leaf mulch. Beware of slugs and snails in spring, as they feast on the young leaves.
