Description

Phlox paniculata Younique Old Pink is a dwarf variety of panicled phlox that has flowers of a delightful powdery pink, washed with white. They are gathered in large panicles that release a gourmet fragrance evoking vanilla and nutmeg. It is also a resistant variety, with medium green foliage that proves to be less susceptible to diseases and mildew. Its vintage colours and compact size make it suitable for romantic settings in small gardens, pots, or borders. It grows well in any moist soil, in the sun. Visited by all pollinators, it also provides beautiful summer bouquet flowers.

Phlox paniculata Younique Old Pink belongs to the Polemoniaceae family. It has the Phlox paniculata as its ancestor, a robust perennial native to fertile and damp meadows in the eastern United States. Younique Old Pink forms a woody stump and a clump of leafy stems that do not exceed 40 cm (16in) in height and 45 cm (18in) in width at maturity. The stems, stiff and brittle, are covered with alternate, simple, ovate, and lanceolate leaves, which are a medium green colour. Flowering begins in early July, at the height of summer, and continues until September, provided faded flowers are removed. The small flowers, 1.5 to 2.5 cm (1in) in diameter, have a tubular corolla of which is pale pink, washed with white. The centre of the flower is white. They are clustered at the end of the stems in dense and round 15 cm (6in) diameter panicles, pleasantly scented. Flowering is melliferous and nectariferous. The above-ground vegetation, deciduous, emerges in spring and withers in autumn.

Phlox paniculata are perennial plants commonly found in gardens, as their simplicity and legendary generosity are almost unmatched in perennial beds. They get along well with Monardas and Daisies. You can mix the Younique series Phlox with each other, with lavender blue asters, or with sage.  Phlox Younique Old Pink make good companions for roses, as their colours compliment each other.  Phlox paniculata 'Younique' is a top-notch perennial to brighten up balconies, flower beds and bouquets.

Planting and care

The Younique phlox prefers a moist and rich soil, even clay which is drained. It needs sunlight to flower well. An atmosphere that is too dry or too hot makes the foliage more susceptible to powdery mildew, although this selection is less susceptible to this disease. Planted in the sun in a climate with hot summers, it will require regular watering and mulching at the base. Pruning faded flowers encourages more blooms to appear until the end of summer. Protect young plants from slugs, which are fond of their tender shoots.
