Description

Phlox paniculata Jade is a compact variety of Phlox paniculata, highly floriferous in summer, with white flowers tinged with green. This beautiful perennial plant offers clusters of bright flowers, gathered in fragrant panicles, to enjoy in flower beds or to smell in bouquets. 'Jade', both charming and easy to grow, is naturally resistant to mildew. It is an excellent perennial plant for flower beds, also ideal in pots. It thrives in a damp and fertile soil, in a very sunny position.

Phlox paniculata is a perennial herbaceous plant originating from the United States. It belongs to the family of Polemoniaceae. 'Jade' grows in a bushy clump with a compact and erect habit, composed of leafy stems. The adult plant will not exceed 60 cm (24in) in height when in bloom and 45 to 50 cm (18 to 20in) in width. The stems, stiff and brittle, are covered with simple leaves which are dark but vivid green, measuring about 5 to 13 cm (2 to 5in) in length. The flowering begins in July, at the height of summer, and continues until September, provided that faded inflorescences are regularly removed. Emerging from green bracts, the floral buds open into small flowers composed of white petals, speckled with green on the edges. The flowers are grouped at the end of the upright, very dense and pyramidal stems, 15 cm (6in) in length, and are pleasantly fragrant, weighing down the stems. The flowering is melliferous and nectariferous. All above-ground vegetation disappears in winter.

Phlox paniculata are perennial plants accustomed to cottage gardens, as their simplicity, longevity and legendary generosity are almost unmatched in perennial flower beds. They get along well with Monarda or Daisies. 'Jade' goes well with all the flowers in the garden. It could be planted in a white flower bed, with delphiniums, roses or penstemons for example. This phlox is perfect in English-style mixed borders. It can be combined with airy asters like 'Miracle Blanc', or the Aster pringlei Monte Cassino, foxgloves, roses 'Jacqueline du Pré' or 'Boule de Neige' for example. The flower bed can be punctuated with silver or grey foliage: artemisias, cinerarias, Stachys or silver baskets. Phlox 'Jade' is a first-class variety for planting in pots and making bouquets.

Planting and care

Phlox paniculata Jade is easy to grow in any good garden soil that is not too chalky, but is loose and fertile, well-prepared. Plant it from September until April, in a humud-rich, moist and well-drained soil. Although it tolerates partial shade, it will flower better in a very sunny spot. Add compost at planting time and every autumn. Cut back faded stems as they appear. Divide the stump every 3-4 years after flowering.
