Description

"Wild" variety with thread-like spikes, the Persicaria amplexicaulis 'High Society' fits well in both contemporary gardens and gardens with a wild look.

Called persicaria, knotweed or formerly Polygonum, the Persicaria amplexicaulis 'High Society' has Himalayan origins which give it incredible hardiness and ease of cultivation. A floriferous perennial, it produces numerous 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) long thread-like spikes from July to October composed of small red-purple buds that turn candy pink as they open. Very aesthetic, the different stages of flowering produce a beautiful range of colours from red-purple to deep pink. The flowering is continuous throughout the summer until autumn and can reach a height of 1.20m (4ft) at maturity.

The semi-evergreen, lanceolate (lance-shaped) leaves of Polygonum amplexicaule measure from 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10in) long, they are medium green in colour, turning red in autumn. Thanks to its spreading habit, the plant can be used as a ground cover.

The 'High Society' Persicaria grows in the sun but appreciates bright partial shade. It likes rich and heavy soils, even very moist. It can be grown independently on sunny banks of a pond or in a cool and partially shaded understory at the foot of trees.

Very trendy, the Persicaria amplexicaulis fits well in both contemporary gardens and gardens with a wild look, and forms beautiful autumn scenes with grasses like miscanthus, molinias, and panicums.
