Description
The Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Golden Arrow' is distinguished from other perennial knotweeds by its abundant foliage with an unusual colour, a very bright chartreuse yellow, decorative even outside of flowering. This almost golden foliage perfectly highlights thin spikes of deep red that bloom continuously from mid-summer until late in the season. It is a robust plant, not very demanding in terms of soil nature, as long as it is fertile, to be placed preferably in partial shade to preserve its foliage from direct sun.
The Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Golden Arrow' is a plant in the family polygonaceae. It is a deciduous perennial, very hardy, which forms a vigorous clump of 60 cm (24in) high. This plant spreads more or less slowly, depending on the richness of the soil, and can form imposing clumps. Very floriferous, this knotweed produces at the axil of the leaves, located at the end of the stems, many spikes measuring 7 to 12 cm (3 to 5in) long composed of small flowers that are red garnet in buds and become redder, more violet when they bloom. The flowering period lasts about 4 months, from June-July to September, if the soil does not dry out too much. The leaves, carried by sturdy stems, are lanceolate to cordate, shaped like an ace of spades and hairy on the underside, measuring 25 cm (10in) long. The almost yellowish green colour turns red in autumn.
Like astrantias, knotweeds are very popular plants, due to their good adaptation to cold and humid climates and their clean appearance that suits both contemporary gardens and country and romantic flowerbeds. They form beautiful autumn scenes with grasses such as Miscanthus and Panicum. Thanks to its spreading habit and very bright foliage, Polygonum 'Golden Arrow' can be used as ground cover in a partially shaded area, making sure to leave enough space for it. This knotweed appreciates rich and heavy, even very wet soils and can be grown independently on sunny pond banks, along a sunken path, or in a cool and partially shaded understory at the base of trees. Asters, Japanese anemones, and inulas are good companions for Persicaria, in the garden or in bouquets, as they also flower until autumn.

Planting and care
The Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Golden Arrow' thrives in a sunny but not scorching or semi-shaded exposure. It is a very easy plant to grow, it even tolerates moderate drought if the soil it receives is deep. Plant it in any type of soil, as long as it is fresh, clayey or humiferous, even marshy, in spring or autumn, in groups to create a mass effect. Enrich the soil with organic fertilizer at the start of the vegetation, as it is a voracious plant. Control its growth so that it does not harm neighboring plants. Mulch the soil in June in regions where the summer is hot and dry. Divide the clumps in October every three years and replant the plants in another location in the garden.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
