Description

Common Marjoram or Origanum vulgare 'Compactum' is an excellent ground cover with a very dense and compact habit and aromatic leaves that evoke the scent of Provence.

Also known as Marjoram, Common Marjoram produces attractive oval-shaped leaves measuring 2 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) in length. These deciduous leaves are dark green and rounded, appearing from the end of frost until the next round. In June, small pink flowers form globular spikes measuring 3-5cm (1-2in) in diameter. Its semi-erect habit makes it ideal for covering dry and sunny areas in a rockery.

Common Marjoram is hardy and grows without any maintenance. It thrives in all dry soils in full sun. It can also be grown in pots using a mixture of compost and garden soil, with moderate watering.

In the morning, harvest Marjoram leaves as soon as they start flowering to use them fresh or dried in soups, sauces, marinated meats, pizzas, and liqueurs. Marjoram has medicinal properties, acting as an antispasmodic, expectorant, antiseptic, and stress reliever.
