Description

Mimulus ringens is a perennial herbaceous plant of wet environments producing light blue-violet flowers on initially bronze and then green foliage.

It forms a bushy clump about 60 cm to 70 cm (23.6 in to 27.6 in) tall. From June, blue flowers with yellow throats in the form of a tubular calyx appear, like small butterflies just resting on the foliage. The flowers bloom continuously until early autumn. The leaves are lanceolate, long and narrow, sometimes slightly dentate, and of a fairly dark green on a square, erect, brown stem.

It appreciates wet areas and easily self-sows. Planted on the edge of a pond, it will pair well with Japanese Irises, Spiralled Rushes, or Marsh Spurges.

Mimulus are also known as Monkey Flowers due to the shape and colours of the flowers of certain varieties that resemble a monkey's head.
