Description
Leucanthemum x superbum 'Broadway Lights' is a very beautiful variety of large yellow daisy recently obtained in the U.S.A: its large head-shaped flowers, which gradually change from bright yellow to white, create a magnificent range of colours on the fully flowering plant. They bloom all summer at the end of very sturdy and robust stems, enhanced by a compact and leafy plant, adorned with beautiful dark green foliage. It is also a fully hardy perennial and easy to grow in the sun, in ordinary soil that remains damp, in the garden as well as in pots. Its flowers have excellent vase life and look great in flower beds.
The genus Leucanthemum belongs to the family of Asteraceae. 'Broadway Lights' is a recently obtained horticultural hybrid derived from Leucanthemum x superbum, the well-known large daisy. It is a unique cultivar, perfectly hardy, vigorous and floriferous from a young age. It quickly forms a thick clump of sturdy and leafy stems, taller than wide, about 50-55 cm (20-22in) high and spreading over 50 cm: this daisy does not require staking. Abundant in summer, it completely disappears in winter. The flowering takes place from June to September, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed and the soil remains moist. It takes the form of large solitary heads, 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) in diameter. At the beginning, the entire inflorescence is yellow. Gradually, the ligules or petals fade to a paler yellow, while the centre of the head retains a beautiful golden yellow colour. At maturity, about two weeks after blooming, the flowers become almost white around bright yellow centres that turn brown. The sturdy floral stems are perfect for cutting. The leaves are dark green, simple and alternate with irregularly toothed edges. The plant reaches its full maturity in five years.
In daisies, extravagant colours are not found, instead focus is on the detail and structure of the flowers. This yellow daisy, perfect for making bouquets, is ideal for decorating the patio, flower beds, or a flowery meadow. It can be planted among other simple and carefree perennials such as oriental poppies, thistles, as well as grasses. Accompany its flowers with cosmos, combine it with peonies, columbines, asters, blue or white cornflowers, baptisias or blue lupins, bellflowers, or snapdragons for example. 'Broadway Lights' will bring a touch of cheerfulness to your garden.

Planting and care
Plant Leucanthemum x superbum 'Broadway Lights' in deep, loose, moist, not too rich soil, which is well-drained. This plant tolerates limestone fairly well. Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
