Description

Lamiastrum galeobdolon 'Florentinum', or yellow archangel, is a perennial ground cover. It is stoloniferous, with growth similar to that of periwinkle.

This excellent ground cover brings brightness to shaded areas of the garden, thanks to its foliage and flowers. Its evergreen foliage is green variegated with silver. Its flowers, similar to those of white dead-nettle, boast a glorious bright yellow colour.

Very hardy, it quickly colonises embankments and grows very well at the base of trees, together with daffodils, especially Narcissus 'Actaea' with which it forms a perfect duo. Plant it with vigorous perennials such as Geranium macrorrhizum 'Spessart', Epimedium perralchicum, and knotweed 'Red Dragon'.

Planting and care

It thrives in shade or partial shade. It can tolerate full sun in moist soil, but the foliage colour is more attractive in shade. Plant it in light, chalky soil that is moist but not overly wet, as lamium is sensitive to stagnant moisture. It is easy to grow. Prune the plant in spring to encourage new shoots and achieve more compact plants.
