Description

Houttuynia cordata Chameleon is a small ground cover perennial with beautiful variegated foliage in cream, pink, and green.

Also known as Heart-Leaved Houttuynia or Chameleon Plant, Houttuynia has very aromatic foliage, often used as a condiment in Asian cuisine.

Aside from its unique flavour, Houttuynia cordata Chameleon is cultivated for its ornamental foliage. In spring, it produces stems with heart-shaped leaves irregularly variegated in green, cream, and pink. In early summer, the plant produces conical flowers with 4 large white bracts.

With rapid growth, Houttuynia spreads through its numerous running underground rootstocks. It can even become invasive in rich and waterlogged soils. Very hardy and easy to grow, it prefers partial shade in any rich, moist, and heavy soil, even clay.

Plant it as a border plant in a partially shaded bed alongside epimediums, periwinkle, or Pachysandra.

Planting and care

The Houttuynia cordata Chameleon grows spontaneously in shaded and humid areas. It can be very invasive in waterlogged soils along rivers or ponds. Plant it in the shade, at the base of large trees, and in this location, the relative drought that prevails there limits their vegetation.
