Description

The Heuchera Indian Summer 'Cranberry' is a beautiful perennial forming a ground cover. Its foliage is vermilion red with copper reflections and evergreen. It brightens up flower beds in dappled sun, partial shade, or even full shade. It produces white flower stems in summer, which further enhance its appeal.

Heucheras have become essential plants in our gardens in recent years. Their evergreen foliage, available in multiple shades, brings brilliance to flower beds. These plants from the Saxifragaceae family make fantastic borders for flower beds. They also perform very well in pots, making them suitable for even small terraces. The 'Cranberry' Heuchera reaches approximately 30 cm (12in) in height and 40 cm (16in) in width, with its delicate inflorescences rising above the lobed foliage. The foliage, which evolves in warm shades of orange-red to copper, is a constant delight.

The Heuchera 'Cranberry', like many heucheras, is not very demanding regarding soil type, as long as it is well-drained. In heavy soil, it is preferable to lighten the planting soil with sand or well-decomposed compost. It prefers partial or dappled shade, but still needs some light, at least in the morning, to express its beautiful colours. Once established, it can tolerate temporary droughts.

You can also easily propagate it by cuttings, by taking a section of its creeping stems, which will allow you to create a whole border in a few years. This is also a way to regenerate the clump, which sometimes tends to weaken after 3 to 5 years of cultivation.

Plant this heuchera in large numbers to achieve a spectacular and extensive ground cover effect, but you can also combine it with other varieties with similar colours such as 'Caribbean Sea' or 'Beaujolais'. On the other hand, you can play with contrasts, like with the 'Silver Scrolls' heuchera. In shade, its bright foliage will enhance the dark foliage of ferns (Dryopteris, Polystichum), Liriopes, or Ophiopogons. Finally, it can create a beautiful colour motif with bushes such as the Physocarpus 'Diable d'Or'.

Planting and care

Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially backfill, and place your seedling (having removed the pot) so that the top of the root ball of your plant is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. The addition of a base fertiliser (dehydrated blood, horn powder) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, regular watering for a few weeks will facilitate the establishment of your plant. In late winter, heucheras renew their foliage. We recommend cutting back the previous year's leaves in January or February.
