Heuchera Cherry Cola

Heuchera 'Cherry Cola' truly lives up to its name, dressed and blooming in summer in shades of copper, rust, milk chocolate, and cola. Flowering in this variety is particularly abundant in late spring and early summer. This small perennial is a real treat for the eyes, enjoyed all year round in borders or in a pretty pot on the terrace. It will thrive in partial shade or even in full sun, in any light and not too dry garden soil.

Heuchera 'Cherry Cola' belongs to the Saxifragaceae family. It is a horticultural hybrid from the 'Soda' series, introduced in 2010 by Terra Nova Nurseries located in Oregon, United States. The plant will reach about 35 cm (14 in) in height and 40 cm (16 in) in width, forming a large, spreading, and dense clump of foliage. The foliage, evergreen in winter, is the first asset of this variety: the leaves are rounded and lobed, slightly plicate and heavily marbled. Their rich hues are a blend of copper-red, rust, brown, and brick. In spring, the colours are brighter. In summer, the dominant colour is rust. The second asset of this variety is its amazing and long-lasting flowering: light and airy, but abundant, it starts in May-June and continues until July-August. The long spikes of flowers, neither truly red nor truly brown, touched with salmon and cream, play with the wind and light. They give a blurry aspect to this romantic flowering, a movement that is difficult to capture on canvas, which has earned heucheras the nickname "Despair of the Painter" that they share with some saxifrages. This plant has a shallow root system, which makes it quite sensitive to dry soils, especially in sunny exposures.

Planted in the ground, in a partially shaded and cool rockery or in a row to highlight a path, this heuchera will bring a fantastic touch of colour to the garden. Pair it with plants in an acidic green like Alchemilla or euphorbias for a strong contrast. The combination with small grasses that prefer moist soil, such as Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra Aureola) or Carex (Carex oshimensis Everillo), is also very successful. Pair it with the blue flowers of perennial geraniums or catmints, the only shade it truly lacks, and it will complement it perfectly. Consider heucheras to fill your pots, containers, and flower boxes, accompanied by geraniums, for example. As a cut flower, the delicate bells of this plant add a lot of lightness to bouquets.
