Description

Heuchera americana 'Birkin' is a perennial variety known for its sturdiness and vigour, particularly in the face of occasional drought and high temperatures. During the months of May and June, small cream-white bell-shaped flowers emerge above a beautiful green foliage, variegated with purple, pink, and copper.

Originating in American woodlands, this heuchera has evergreen foliage, coloured dark green with bluish reflections and veined with varying shades of purple, copper, and black, with irregularly serrated edges. It is highly hardy (down to -20 °C (-4 °F)). Its spreading habit makes it an ideal ground cover for shade.

Thanks to its bell-shaped flowers, the Birkin variety is perfect for cut flowers and adds lightness to bouquets. It pairs beautifully with shade-loving perennials such as Hosta ‘Halcyon', Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola', Arrhenatherum bulbosum 'Variegatum', Holcus mollis 'Variegatus', and epimediums.

Planting and care

Place Heuchera americana Birkin in shade or partial shade during spring or autumn. This hardy perennial is easy to grow and thrives in good garden soil. Therefore, plant it in a light and rich, moist but well-drained soil. Reserve a depth of 20 cm (8 in). Space your heucheras 30 cm (12 in) apart. During winter, heucheras renew their foliage, so it is best to cut back the leaves from the previous year from January to February. Also, the roots tend to lift, so it is necessary to mulch every year or potentially lift and replant in September and October, placing the collar just at ground level. Be aware of leaf eelworms, vine weevils, and virus-causing galls, which can be problematic.
