Description

Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Strawberry Fields Forever' is a recent variety, very unique with its large scented flowers in an unprecedented colour pattern! From June to August, its clump of ribbon-like, arching leaves is adorned with abundant star-shaped flowers with pale pink petals enhanced by fringed margins and a purple-pink heart, surrounding a chartreuse-green throat. In addition to having repeating flowering, its foliage persists all year round, making it even more appealing for planting in containers and bordering flower beds. Give it a bright location in rich, moist, and deep soil for a more beautiful effect.

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Hemerocallidaceae family, which is closely related to the lily family. These are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage. 'Strawberry Fields Forever', obtained in 1997 by Stamile, reaches a height of 60 cm (24 in) and a width of 50 cm (20 in). The flowers are large, 12 cm (5 in) in diameter and star-shaped. Individually, they last only for a day, but they continuously bloom from June to August. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots. The stems are robust and produce beautiful bouquets. The foliage is linear and evergreen. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils, but are more abundant and floriferous in fresh, rich, deep soil, when well exposed to the sun.

These plants are very easy to grow and thrive in both shade and sun. Some of them can be slightly invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Daylilies are often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of their vibrant colours and their ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to their lack of modesty, as they are beautifully exuberant and complement other perennials well. Plant them generously in the background of your flower beds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Strawberry Fields Forever' will fit perfectly into the setting of a romantic garden, with perennials in shades of blue, pink, and white such as campanulas, penstemons, perennial flaxes, or phlox. On a balcony or terrace, large pots with a minimum depth of 30 cm (12 in) should be used, and dwarf varieties should be chosen. Their exoticism and luxuriant foliage work wonders as border plants around a pond or lake, accompanied by plants with contrasting round or divided foliage, such as marsh marigolds or willowherbs. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Many varieties have been developed in Japan, where they are very popular. The flowers of these plants come in a wide range of colours and shapes. More than 60,000 cultivars, mostly resulting from hybridisations by gardening enthusiasts, are documented, appreciated, and studied by international Hemerocallis societies.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Strawberry Fields Forever' in good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. Under these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, and so there is no need to treat it. Rodents are not interested in it either. Daylilies thrive both in partial shade and in full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. If you are planting several plants, do not install them too closely to each other as the gaps will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, it is a good idea to keep the soil moderately moist. It is preferable to divide the clumps in autumn, after flowering.
