Description

Originating from northwestern Turkey to the Caucasus, and northeastern Greece, the Helleborus x hybridus Apricot is a perennial plant with orange to dark purple spots that will brighten up the shaded areas of your garden in winter. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F). It has spreading palmate, toothed basal leaves, slightly dentate, dark green and shiny, evergreen, 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets.

The Oriental Hellebore reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) and spreads over 30 cm (12in) at maturity. From January to March, a bunch of single flowers forms, measuring 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter, cup-shaped and drooping. The Hellebore is a bushy plant. It does not like to be moved once established and takes time to bloom.

This toxic plant should be handled with caution. It is suitable for cut flowers and for borders, edges, or even containers... Over time, the Hellebore flowers do not fade like most other flowers, but they dry up.

Each seed-sown hellebore is unique in flower color: thus slight colour variations may exist between two plants, which is normal and inevitable. If, however, the difference is too significant and alters the desired effect, we will refund or replace the affected plant.

Planting and care

Helleborus Orientalis grows in most soils that are rich and neutral in partial or light shade, sheltered from wind. Plant from early autumn to spring to bloom from January to March. It thrives in deeply cultivated soil mixed with a quantity of organic matter. For fertilization, use bone meal or another organic fertilizer. In acidic soil, add a bit of lime. Water the plants well then add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) thick. Regularly remove wilted leaves. Cut most of the leaves to highlight the flowers. Be careful not to plant the plants too close to each other to promote their development. Hellebore does not like stagnant water which may cause it to rot.
