Description

Oriental Hellebore Aubergine is a perennial plant, dark red with white edges that will brighten up the shady areas of your garden in winter. This hardy plant, native to northwestern Turkey to the Caucasus, can tolerate temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F). It has spreading palmate, slightly toothed, dark green and shiny basal leaves, 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets.

The Oriental Hellebore reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) and spreads to 30 cm (12in) at maturity. From January to March, a bouquet of single,cup-shaped and nodding flowers forms, 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter.

It is suitable for cut flowers and in borders, edges, or even containers. Over time, the flowers of the Hellebore do not wither like most other flowers, but dry up. The Hellebore is a bushy plant. It does not like to be moved once established, as the young shoots take some time to flower.

Plant them at the base of deciduous bushes, which will provide them with winter sun but protect them in summer.

Planting and care

Helleborus Orientalis grows in most soils that are rich and neutral in partial or light shade, sheltered from the wind. Plant from early autumn to spring to bloom from January to March. It thrives in deeply worked soil mixed with organic matter. For feed, use bone meal or another organic fertilizer. In acidic soil, add a little lime. Water well after planting and then add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) thick. Regularly remove faded leaves. Cut most of the leaves to showcase the flowers. Be careful not to plant too close together to promote their development. Hellebore does not like stagnant water as it may cause it to rot. It dislikes full sun in summer and the soil drying out. Plant it under deciduous bushes or large perennial plants, which will provide it with light and sun in winter but protect it from the scorching rays of summer.
