Description

The Delosperma 'Wheels of Wonder Hot Violet' is a remarkable new hybrid delosperma known for its large, dazzling flowers in a light and vibrant violet color, surrounding a beautiful white eye and a small yellow heart. This perennial forms beautiful mats of small succulent leaves and blooms from June to October, even in dry and poor soil. It should be planted in a very sunny location, above walls, in rock gardens, or for terrace decoration. Placing it in a hanging position will allow you to bring it indoors during winter, if necessary.

This Delosperma is a variety from Japan, selected at the Innovert 2014 competition of the Salon du Végétal. Delosperma, belonging to the family of aizoaceae and cousins of mesembryanthemums, are perennials native to South Africa, East Africa, and Madagascar, which are perfectly suited to hot and dry climates. They can be planted between stones, on the tiles of a path, or on a dry slope, as long as they find some soil. However, if your region experiences frost near -10 °C, place it in a pot or container that you can bring indoors during winter.

This 'Wheels of Wonder Violet' Purslane is one of the latest additions to a beautiful series of hybrid plants offering flowers twice as large as the typical ones, in a range of vibrant and radiant colors. It has creeping, ramified stems that easily take root, thus colonizing the space over a width that can reach 1 m (3ft) under favorable conditions. They bear small, light green, cylindrical succulent leaves. These leaves are sessile, very fleshy, verrucose, and measure about 3 cm (1in). It forms a small tuft 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) high, covered with beautiful flowers grouped in cymes. Each flower has a corolla of fine ligules in a pure, light and vibrant violet color, painted with a white halo surrounding a yellow eye, the flower being centered on a small white and yellow heart. The flowering period extends over a long time, bringing vibrant colors to neglected areas.

The Delosperma Wheels of Wonder Violet is an excellent rock garden plant. Therefore, it thrives in the company of Sedums, Dianthus, and Wall Bellflowers. However, it will also be perfect at the feet of Stachys and Valerians, with which it shares the same requirements: sun and dry soil. Planting different varieties of the 'Wheels of Wonder' series in containers will create a highly colorful and easy-to-maintain carpet for a very long period.

Planting and care

The Delosperma settles in place in spring or autumn in a well-drained, dry, even stony soil. It appreciates walls, rockeries, and well-exposed slopes. If your region is subject to frost below -10°C (14°F), place it in a pot or container. This way, you can shelter it during winter if necessary.

A sunny and warm location is essential for it to feel comfortable and bloom abundantly. Some watering during prolonged dry spells will be welcome. You can remove faded flowers to encourage their renewal. Dividing the clump may be necessary after a few years, depending on its location.

Ensure that it does not get covered with dead leaves from nearby trees as they are likely to rot. Similarly, it does not appreciate having its feet in stagnant water.
