Quick delivery but the vine-plant was a bit dry and the roots were exposed upon opening the packaging, but no damage. The recovery seems satisfactory but still a bit early to confirm. I can't wait to see it in flower!

Description
Calanthe reflexa is a rare, semi-hardy, fragrant terrestrial orchid with a flowering stem composed of refined flowers with pearly white sepals and petals and a pink and white lip. It blooms in summer and its long green leaves form beautiful clumps. It should be grown in bright shade, in thick humus, in a very sheltered location.
This terrestrial orchid comes directly from the mountains of Japan, where it is found along streams, on moist slopes or even directly in small streams and their flooded surroundings during the summer monsoon. It is well-adapted to the cold and is one of the hardiest species in its genus. This plant develops from tightly packed pseudobulbs around a rhizome, vaguely resembling the body of a shrimp. It flowers in summer (from July to August), along 4 to 5 stems measuring 40 cm (16in) in height, producing magnificent bicoloured, fragrant flowers, with variable colours ranging from lavender to pearly pink and white. The flower consists of 3 sepals and 3 petals, one of which is called the lip. It is often this floral part that is astonishing in orchids. The lip of Calanthe reflexa is elongated, curved downwards and consists of 3 dark lavender lobes. The semi-evergreen leaves are light green, beautifully pleated and 15-25 cm (6-10in) in length, 5-8 cm (2-3in) in width.
This orchid prefers cool undergrowth and likes acidic soils, rich in humus and moist in summer, even occasionally waterlogged. It likes warmth in protected and bright locations, but never direct sunlight. In regions with mild winters, it will retain its foliage; elsewhere, its leaves will be damaged by frost and regenerate in early spring. The "rhizomatous" crown will slowly produce suckers until it forms beautiful clumps, but it will take at least 3 years to obtain 4-5 inflorescences. An exceptional plant for the experienced gardener. Plant Calanthe reflexa in a protected location, in light and moist undergrowth, or even near water sources, in the company of arisaemas, ferns or hostas.
When you receive your orchids, handle them with care: these plants produce few roots and are delicate!

Planting and care
Calanthe reflexa likes protected environments, light soils rich in humus and occasionally moist. The soil should never dry out in summer but should also not be waterlogged in winter. In excessive winter wet, the rootstock will rot. Grow it in partial shade, at the edge of large trees, with the west being the best exposure. In heavy soil, add 1/3 leaf compost and 1/3 non-chalky sand, mixed with your topsoil to a depth and width of 20-25cm (8-10in). In regions with cold winters, protection is essential against cold and wet. Growing in pots or containers is possible, using a mix of 60% ericaceous soil, 20% horticultural compost, and 20% coarse sand. Terrestrial calanthes are quite demanding plants during the growing season: applying geranium-type fertilizer at half the recommended dosage every week from mid-May to mid-September will be very beneficial.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
