Received a plan with small shoots that are starting to emerge from the ground. Looks promising.

More information

The small, densely variegated pinkish-purple plumes of this compact variety bloom in summer on beautiful blue-green cut foliage, adding charm to the edges of ponds or damp areas. This Chinese astilbe from the Vision series is undemanding in terms of water, and therefore better suited to partially shaded beds in ordinary soil.

Description

Astilbe chinensis 'Vision in Pink' is part of a group of recent hybrids derived from the Chinese Astilbe, selected for their compact habit, vigour, and moderate moisture requirements. Its small, dense, and intensely pinkish-purple plumes bloom abundantly during a long summer period, above a beautiful, finely-cut greenish-blue foliage, adding charm to the edges of ponds, wet areas and partially shaded areas in the garden, in ordinary, moist soil.

Astilbe chinensis, belonging to the Saxifragaceae family, is native to China, Korea, and Eastern Siberia. It is a rhizomatous and herbaceous perennial plant that is found in moist and fertile soils, although it is less water-demanding than other species. The 'Vision' series Astilbes were developed in the USA.

'Vision in Pink' was selected for its compact habit and long-lasting, beautiful pink flowers. This small variety slowly forms a mound like a fern. This cushion-like clump is composed of leafy stems reaching 60 cm (24in) high with a spread of 35 cm (14in). The upright, slightly arching stems bear compound leaves divided into 3 toothed, hairy, fairly dark, shiny green leaflets with bluish highlights. In average climates, 'Vision in Pink' blooms from June to August. Its particularly abundant flowering takes the form of long, branched spikes in feathery plumes, densely packed with tiny flowers. Their intense pink colour, violet to magenta when in bud, lightens slightly when they open and mature.

Astilbe chinensis 'Vision in Pink' with its modest size, graceful appearance, and cheerful flowering, fits well at the edge of flower beds, alongside lovely shade-loving companions such as ferns and Hostas. Its intense raspberry pink plumes bring a touch of cheerfulness to the undergrowth, revive north-east facing facades along with Hydrangeas, and give a unique charm to the surroundings of water features, which also serve as a mirror. Planted in a ribbon, Astilbes highlight shaded pathways with Liriope muscari and saxifrages. The fern-like foliage contrasts beautifully with their opulent neighbours, such as Hostas or rhubarb, while their feathery flowering perfectly complements Persicaria amplexicaulis or tall Phlox, for example. Vision Astilbes can tolerate filtered sunlight and need consistently moist soil. They are hardy and robust and need very little maintenance.

Planting and care

Astilbe chinensis 'Vision in Pink' prefers moist, heavy soil with a semi-shaded exposure. It will tolerate a damp soil, but not a dry one, and a sunny, but filtered exposure. It does not tolerate chalky soils well and particularly likes soils rich in humus. You can add compost in spring or a balanced fertiliser rich in potash to promote abundant flowering. It does not mind the cold and is perfectly hardy down to at least -20°C (1°F). It is disease-resistant with few natural enemies. After flowering, you can cut the faded stems to allow the clump to regenerate.
