Description

Anemone multifida 'Rosea', also known as Multifid Anemone, is a small perennial plant that forms a spread-out clump of deeply divided foliage with silky-haired undersides. It blooms in summer with pinkish-purple flowers and bright yellow stamens. This plant thrives in moist woodland areas and makes a wonderful companion to hostas and ferns, establishing itself in the garden for a long time.

Anemone multifida belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. It is native to Canada and the northern United States, ranging from Alaska to New York, and even further south in states like Arizona and New Mexico. 'Rosea' is a selected cultivar prized for its beautiful pinkish-purple corollas. This plant forms a spread-out clump of stems that reach 50cm (20in) in flower height, 30cm (12in) for foliage, and spread over 40cm (16in). Flowering occurs in July-August. The inflorescence consists of one or several flowers. The flowers lack petals but have five to eight sepals that are pinkish-purple, becoming whiter towards the centre of the flower. They are slightly hairy, especially on the outer surface. The centre of the flower contains up to 80 golden yellow stamens. The fruit, resembling an inverted strawberry, transforms into a fluffy mass when ripe. It is an achene measuring a few millimetres in length. This anemone grows from a caudex, forming clumps of palmate and branched basal leaves. The long-petioled leaves are covered in a mantle of long, silky white hairs. Each leaf is divided into several long and pointed lobes, which sometimes further subdivide.

Anemone multifida 'Rosea' prefers coolness and partial shade. Plant it in deep, rich, well-drained soil in light shade, under the canopy of deciduous trees or bushes if the soil remains moist. This species requires perfectly drained soil and can even be grown in fine gravel. It is a less competitive species and should be planted away from overly prolific plants. These plants establish and multiply through division in winter or early spring during their vegetative rest. They require little maintenance. Plant in shade gardens, borders, shady rockeries, partially sunny and cool areas. You can plant it alongside hostas, ferns, and bleeding hearts. It is also a good plant for rock gardens, alpine gardens, and troughs.
