Description
We offer you a Collection of Aeoniums which brings together three unique varieties: Aeonium arboreum 'Schwarzkopf', Aeonium 'Garnet', and Aeonium leucoblepharum. These succulent plants are sought after for their spectacular rosette foliage and unusual habit. By the seaside, on the terrace, or indoors, their strong personality is appreciated. Perennial and drought-resistant, they need protection from frost, as they cannot tolerate temperatures below -2°C. Grown in pots like cacti, they can be easily brought inside during winter. Use them to decorate a bright room or a conservatory throughout the year.
The collection consists of:
1 x Aeonium arboreum 'Schwarzkopf': An impressive variety reaching up to 1 m in height, with intensely black foliage that is almost hypnotic. Its tight rosettes form spectacular clusters, contrasting with its bright yellow flowering in early spring.
1 x Aeonium 'Garnet': This slightly more compact plant reaches about 80-90 cm in height. Its rosettes display deep garnet shades, greener at the base of the leaves. It also produces small yellow flowers in dense clusters.
1 x Aeonium leucoblepharum: Smaller, with a maximum height of 75 cm, this Aeonium is distinguished by its bright green rosettes with a reddish midrib and slightly pink edges. It is covered in yellow to reddish flowers in May. This variety, unlike the other two, prefers partial shade and soils that are not too arid.
These Aeoniums are ideally planted in spring. Primarily grown in pots, they can be easily brought indoors to protect them from the cold. They are also suitable for indoor cultivation, provided they are placed in a well-lit spot.
Create an exotic decor on the terrace or balcony, by pairing them with proteas, agaves, cacti and succulents. In coastal areas, you can plant them in the ground, in soil lightened with coarse sand, or in a large rockery. In colder regions, growing them in large pots is very easy; ensure good drainage and water generously, but infrequently, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings.

Planting and care
Aeoniums are not very hardy; growing them in pots makes it easy to protect them from winter frosts. Choose pots that are wide and deep enough, as their roots need space to develop properly. Use well-drained compost, ideally a mix of cactus compost and coarse sand to prevent any water retention, which could lead to root rot. Place the pots in a sunny spot, as Aeoniums enjoy light, but avoid the full midday sun in summer to prevent leaf scorching. In winter, bring the pots indoors to a bright, cool place, with temperatures around 10 to 15°C, to provide them with a resting period.
In the ground, plant them in rockeries or Mediterranean gardens, in well-drained soil and sheltered from the wind. Watering should be moderate: water when the soil is dry, reducing the frequency during the winter resting period.
Apply diluted liquid fertiliser once a month during the growth season, from March to September.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
