Description

The simplicity of Rome's Ruin doesn't prevent it from giving a crazy charm to the old walls it adorns with its shiny and evergreen foliage. Cymbalaria muralis flowers for a very long period (from April to September). The flower, like the plant, is of delightful modesty, small, pale violet with a yellow throat.

This small perennial will thrive in a cool, shady and rocky place, for example in the corners of a rockery or at the base of a wall. It prefers to have a slight humidity, at least at the beginning.

Cymbalaria will eventually settle in the cracks of stone stairs, Japanese steps, rocky crevices... Effortlessly, it will give your garden a little fairy tale touch. Its spread can only be limited manually, but it poses no danger to the stability of the walls, as the roots remain on the surface. It is also possible to include it in containers and pots for the terrace.

Its Italian origin and its affection for old stones have earned it the vernacular name of Rome's Ruin.

Planting and care

Plant your Cymbalaria muralis preferably in a semi-shaded position, it will move by itself to sunnier areas. Initially, moisture is necessary but afterwards, it will tolerate droughts, even long-lasting ones, very well. If its invasion bothers or worries you, limit it by manually uprooting it.
