Several naked young plants in buckets by the end of February, and yes, they are growing. The ones that were planted in the shade of a cordyline are growing faster than the others that are in full sun. For now, they are growing in height and not in width. By the end of April, the tallest one should be around 15-20 cm (6-8in). I'll keep observing.

Description

Carex muskingumensis is a perennial gramineous plant, belonging to the Cyperaceae family (Papyrus).

It forms vigorous tufted clumps, which are quite short at first. It bears vigorous and erect culms, displaying abundant light green foliage. The foliage is flexible and delicate, arranged almost horizontally on the stems. The stems end with small spikes of brownish flowers.

We have planted it on the bank of our stream alongside astrantias, astilbes and hostas.

Planting and care

Prepare a planting hole that is 20x20x20cm (8x8x8in) in size. If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole, and place your plant so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3cm (1in) of soil. Firmly press the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your young plant.

This grass remains decorative all year round but renews its foliage in spring. We recommend pruning your plants to 10cm (4in) in late January or early February for a clean-up pruning and to make room for new foliage.
