Description

Carex buchananii is an interesting grass with evergreen brownish-red foliage that becomes coppery at the tips.

Also known as Buchanan's Sedge, this perennial forms a beautiful clump, 50cm (20in) high, with an upright habit. Its young, narrow, cylindrical, rust-coloured leaves, 45cm (18in) long, stand upright and slightly droop as they mature. This Carex flowers in summer with insignificant 3cm (1in) brown flower spikes.

Carex buchananii, native to New Zealand, likes moist, well-drained, rich soils. It likes a position in the sun, sheltered from cold winds. It is ideal in a flower bed with perennials flowering in red or orange and in borders with other grasses. It can also be grown in a pot.

Planting and care

Carex buchananii is easy to grow.

Prepare a planting hole that is 20x20x20cm (8x8x8in) in size. If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole, and place your plant so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3cm (1in) of soil. Firmly press down and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your young plant.
