Chamaemelum nobile Treneague

Chamaemelun nobile Treneague is a variety of Roman chamomile that does not flower. Well known for its medicinal properties, this chamomile is a small aromatic perennial plant that spreads on the ground, quickly forming a low, fragrant and evergreen, fresh green mat. It can withstand occasional trampling and can therefore be used as an alternative to grass in small areas. Thriving in the sun and tolerating moderate drought and sea spray, this plant can be used in rockeries, the gaps between paving stones, or in a wild meadow with other walkable ground covers.

Chamaemelum nobile, from the asteraceae family, is native to Western Europe, North Africa, and Asia. It can be found in many regions that are not too cold, in sandy lawns, by ponds. The Treneague variety is a low-growing clone that hardly flowers and therefore does not require any pruning. The plant spreads laterally through rooting stems that can root upon contact with the ground. Eventually, it forms a low mat that does not exceed 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4in) in height and 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) in width. The evergreen, hairy, apple-green foliage, is finely dissected and strongly aromatic: it releases a surprising apple-like scent, very noticeable when the plant is stepped on!

This is a plant that thrives in full sun and sandy or porous soil, the Roman chamomile Treneague is hardy in zone 7 (down to -15°C (5°F)). It is a highly reputed medicinal plant used in infusions and is often used as a substitute for grass in challenging areas: it is a spreading, fast-growing, fragrant, and persistent ground cover that naturally requires very little maintenance. This chamomile eliminates the need for regular mowing in moderately walked-on areas. In very dry and hot climates, it will require one or two waterings per week. It can be combined with other vigorous ground cover plants such as Phyla nodiflora, Frankenia laevis, or Achillea crithmifolia. This lovely combination can also adorn a small rockery, effectively cover the ground along pathways, or in perennial beds with Geranium sanguineum, Erigeron karvinskianus, Nepeta x faassenii... Many combinations are possible, with Thymus (hirsutus, ciliatus), achilleas (millefolium, coarctata, nobilis), etc...
