Gynura aurantiaca - Purple velvet plant

The Gynura aurantiaca, nicknamed the Velvet Plant, is a beautiful houseplant adorned with velvety leaves tinged with an intense purple hue. This unique foliage which catches the light with almost electric reflections, dresses long stems capable of trailing or even climbing up a support. It is in a hanging pot or on a shelf that its charms are best appreciated. Ensure it receives plenty of light, not-too-dry ambient air, and regular watering while allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.

The Gynura aurantiaca belongs to the Asteraceae family. This perennial plant has a bushy yet upright habit, with flexible stems that slightly turn to climbing or trailing as they mature. The plant can reach a height of 30 cm to 2 m depending on growing conditions and support. The alternate, slightly succulent leaves are lanceolate, dentate, and measure up to 15 cm long. Covered in a fine purple down, they offer a striking purple velvety texture. In winter, the plant produces clusters of yellow-orange to purple flower heads. However, their rather unpleasant odour often prompts gardeners to remove them quickly. Native to the island of Java in Indonesia, this plant thrives in humid, shaded tropical environments. It grows naturally under canopies where the light is filtered, humidity is constant, and warmth is ever-present. These conditions explain its need for bright but indirect light, moderate humidity, and mild temperatures between 18 and 25°C.
This plant is toxic if ingested, so it is advisable to keep it out of reach of children and pets. Not hardy, it can be placed outdoors temporarily in summer, in a spot sheltered from direct sunlight.

The Velvet Plant will thrive in a bright living room, a well-lit bedroom, or a slightly shaded spot in a conservatory. To showcase it, place it on a high shelf or let its stems trail gracefully from a hanging pot. It pairs wonderfully with plants featuring contrasting foliage, such as a Pilea peperomioides or a Chlorophytum comosum. Versatile and charming, it will add character to your interior.
