Planted at the beginning of May, today this vine already has branches reaching a height of 1.5 meters (5 feet). It has found its place in the shade and seems to be enjoying it! It easily clings to a concrete panel fence without damaging it. I can't wait for it to fully cover them. I hope (and I think) it will be magnificent next summer!

Description

The Parthenocissus henryana is a Virginia creeper native to China, with climbing stems equipped with suckers, easy to grow, appreciated for its green foliage with white veins and red in autumn.

The Parthenocissus henryana has deciduous leaves, 8 to 20cm (3 to 8in) long, with 5 leaflets, ovate, dark green with white veins. In autumn, the foliage takes on beautiful reddish hues. Its insignificant narrow clusters of inflorescences, 8 to 15cm (3 to 6in) long, give way to dark blue berries.

The hardy Henry's Virginia creeper can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F), and grows in rich, moist, rather clayey soil in shaded or semi-shaded areas. The colour of the foliage tends to lose its brightness in full sun. Pruning without constraint at any time of the year keeps the plant in its space.

With its height of 7m (23ft), the Parthenocissus henryana is used to cover walls and facades.

Planting and care

The Parthenocissus henryana should be planted in the autumn or spring in a moist and well-drained soil in a shady or semi-shady location. Be careful not to damage the root ball! Train the young plants until they can support themselves. Monitor the growth of this very invasive climbing plant and pinch back any misdirected voluble stems.
