Description

Campsis radicans Judy is a hardy climbing bush that adds an exotic touch with its flowering in beautiful clusters of yellow-orange flowers with a red centre,.

Formerly called Bignonia, this fast-growing plant can reach up to 8m (26ft) in height. Its deciduous foliage, with serrated leaflets, is a vibrant green colour and measures 25cm (10in) long. It is carried by fairly rigid stems. These stems attach themselves to supports on their own with powerful climbing roots. From July to September, numerous elongated trumpet-shaped flowers, 7cm (3in) long, are a beautiful yellow-orange colour with a red centre.

Campsis radicans Judy thrives in fertile, even chalky, deep, fresh, and well-drained soil in a sunny location protected from the wind. Keep its base cool with perennial groundcover or mulch. Pruning should be done at the end of March by cutting back branches to three-quarters of their length.

Campsis radicans Judy is a good wall covering plant and can also be grown in a large container to enhance patios and balconies. Combine it with gauras or sages to keep the soil damp at its base.

Planting and care

Campsis radicans Judy should be planted in spring in a fertile, moist but well-drained soil, preferably against a wall in a sunny and sheltered position, away from cold winds. It can tolerate a shaded position in a warm climate. Prune the branches in late March by three-quarters of their length to encourage the plant to thicken. Protect from severe frost with a mulch.
