Description

Fuchsia 'Lady Boothby' is a climbing variety, capable of reaching 2.5 m (8.2 ft) in height!

This climbing variety produces long, slender stems in spring that rely on the surrounding vegetation to climb as they cannot cling on their own. It can reach up to 2 m to 2.5 m (6.6 ft to 8.2 ft) in height.

In early summer, this climbing fuchsia produces beautiful semi-double bell-shaped flowers, with fuchsia pink sepals and purple-violet corolla with a diameter of 5 cm (2 in). Its deciduous foliage is a tender green.

A semi-hardy variety, Fuchsia 'Lady Boothby' can withstand temperatures as low as -10° C (14° F). It grows in sun or partial shade, sheltered from cold and dry winds, in any rich, moist, and well-draining soil.

In colder regions, plant in a pot or against a south or west-facing wall. Protect its stump in winter with a layer of straw (about 10 cm (3.9 in) thick). Elsewhere, it can be planted at the back of a border with small bushes, which will be covered in summer by thin branches adorned with colourful bells!

Planting and care

Plant in a warm, preferably semi-shaded position, sheltered from cold and dry winds. It thrives in neutral to acidic, rich, fresh, and well-draining soils. In colder regions, it should be planted in a pot or against a south or west-facing wall, with its stump protected in winter by a layer of straw (about 10 cm (3.9 in) thick). Elsewhere, it can be planted at the back of a border alongside small bushes. Being quite demanding, it appreciates the addition of organic fertilisers in spring. It can be cut back to the ground every 2-3 years at the end of winter to stimulate the growth of new shoots and regenerate old wood. To encourage the appearance of pink and white leaves in spring, choose a bright location without direct sunlight.
