Description

The Clematis 'Success Lavender' is a new award-winning variety 'Innovert de bronze' at the Angers Plant Show for its abundant lavender blue flowering along the vine and its compact habit.

From May to September, this robust plant, 2m (7ft) in height, bears single flowers with 6 petals, lavender blue with wide white veins and pale yellow anthers, 18cm (7in) in diameter. Its evergreen, ovate, medium green leaves, 8cm (3in) long, are carried by voluble stems that twine around their support with tendrils.

Hardy to -25°C (-13°F), the Clematis 'Success Lavender' likes a light, well-worked, deep, fresh and fertile soil, in a sunny spot with the base in shade. Plant ground cover plants. It is suitable. Watch out for aphids!

The Clematis 'Success Lavender' is ideal for flowering pots or on a small bamboo structure. Combine several species of clematis or pair it with a climbing rose!

Tips: Avoid excessive fertilisers that stimulate foliage at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to avoid excessive moisture that promotes wilt disease.

Planting and care

The Clematis 'Success Lavender' should be planted in spring or autumn at a depth of 10cm (4in), laying the root ball flat on the ground instead of vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the foot in the shade. Cover the foot with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant cling on its own later. In February, prune every other branch to 50/80cm (20/32in) from the ground, annually.
