Description

Colchicum speciosum, native to the Caucasus, northeastern Turkey, and Iran, is a vigorous perennial plant. In October, one to three large thick flowers appear in shades of deep pink with a wide white heart. Its flowers are not affected by bad weather.

This colchicum is a fairly common species, it is the hardiest and one of the most beautiful. Its tulip-shaped flowers measure up to 8cm (3in) in diameter. When fully mature, the perennial reaches a height of 20cm (8in). It has narrow green foliage that can reach 25cm (10in) in length. The leaves are elliptical in shape. The flowers develop before the leaves.

Colchicum speciosum can be used in rockeries, light woodlands, and lawns. It also works well in pots or even in bouquets. All parts of the colchicum are toxic. Each bulb produces several flowers.

Planting and care

Plant Colchicum speciosum in full sun in deep, fertile and well-drained soil that is not too dry. Plant at a depth of 15cm (6in). Space them 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) apart. They will establish quickly. Plant colchicums in July-August so they can flower in the first year of planting. After planting, leave them in place as they don't like to be disturbed. Colchicums will bloom in October. After flowering, they go dormant until spring and their leaves will bloom in May and completely disappear in June.
