Viola wittrockiana Ultima Radiance F1 Mix- Swiss Garden Pansy

Viola wittrockiana 'Ultima Radiance F1 Mix' bicolour pansies are fascinating, as they change colour depending on temperature and exposure. They boldly display original and varied shades, almost fluorescent, and enhanced by a small white and golden heart, making their dazzling blooms impossible to ignore. These biennial plants are compact, vigorous, and floriferous in autumn and spring, easy to grow in humus-rich and moist soil, in any site.

Garden pansies, sometimes called Swiss giant pansies, are hybrids grouped in the Viola x wittrockiana group. They belong to the violet family and are usually grown as annuals or biennials, although they are theoretically perennials but short-lived. The 'Ultima Radiance F1 Mix' variety produces branched plants that quickly form compact clumps, with a slightly spreading habit, reaching 20 cm (7.9 in) in height and 20 to 30 cm (11.8 in) in width. They bloom in spring and autumn. The 'Radiance Mix' pansies offer medium-sized flowers, 4 to 5 cm (2 in) in diameter, with open blooms. Invariably bicoloured, the flowers display shades ranging from blue to violet, pink, red, orange and white, paler or darker and more or less contrasting depending on the temperature and/or their exposure. All petals show a large central area in a contrasting shade, often lighter, widely bordered by a deeper, extremely bright shade. The base of the petals is adorned with a beautiful bright yellow spot from which beautiful black 'whiskers' radiate. The medium green leaves are elliptical and broadly crenate.

If you love them in the garden you will greatly appreciate them in window boxes, to enjoy while keeping warm inside. You can combine pansies with primroses, wallflowers, grape hyacinths, daisies, and even with grasses like Japanese sedge for a graphic effect with a contemporary feel. Pair them with heucheras and tulips. The bluish-green of glaucous fescues also enhances their beauty.

The petals of pansies are edible, and their colours will bring a touch of originality to your salads and pastries. For this purpose, think of growing them as you would your vegetables - in the most natural way possible.
