I had read somewhere that these naked violets were supposed to resist slugs but no... I haven't given up hope of trying again, but in a container!

Description

Easy to grow, free-flowering, vigorous, and early, the Viola cornuta Sorbet XP 'Blue Blotch' bears elegant flowers (round, deep lavender-blue petals, adorned with a pretty black blotch) for months on end. It combines well with spring bulbs and looks good at the base of asters later in the season, whilst in rockeries, its dark and evergreen carpet spreads quickly. It can be used to create charming borders and sumptuous pots. This small biennial plant is best planted in humus-rich soil, in partial shade or dappled sunlight.

Belonging to the Violaceae family, the horned violet, which grows wild in the Pyrenees, is a low perennial plant that has given rise to many hybrids, the most famous of which are garden pansies. The variety Sorbet XP F1 'Blue Blotch', is a spreading herbaceous plant that reaches a height of 10 to 15 cm (3.9 - 5.9 in) when in flower, and remains compact throughout the seasons. Its dark green, oval, crenated, evergreen leaves form a spreading clump. It is covered in flowers from spring to autumn. Its deep lavender-blue flowers with a tiny yellow heart are quite large, well-rounded, and resemble those of pansies, but their petals are arranged differently. The two upper petals are upright, while the other three, with a black blotch at the base, are inclined downwards. It spreads quite quickly thanks to its root system and also self-seeds easily in the garden.

Horned violets are intended for low beds and borders but also pots and window boxes, where they can be used to create beautiful colour combinations on their own, or with other plants that flower in spring and summer (forget-me-nots, dwarf daffodils, daisies, primroses, tulips, summer and autumn asters, etc.). The flowers of horned violets are edible, so do not hesitate to decorate your plates with one or two flowers, or even sprinkle some on your salads to give them a splash of colour.

Note: Please be aware that our young plant plugs are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, into containers, flowerpots, or directly into flowerbeds.

Planting and care

Horned violets thrive in a light, humus-rich soil, moist but well-drained as they dislike excessive moisture in winter. In heavy soil, add a little sand to improve the drainage.

Plant in a sunny, but not over-hot location, or in light shade.

Fast-growing and free-flowering, they are nutrient-demanding plants. Feed them with a liquid feed once or twice a week during the growth period. Water regularly but not excessively. Deadhead to encourage flowering.
